Mission Action: Hunger

Members of our Hunger Team work in connection with local agencies to stock the shelves of hungry people in our city. We have worked toward this effort through food drives, delivery of meals and even gleaning in the fields. This team works in conjunction with our Hunger Committee to meet hunger needs globally and locally. We hope you will join us as we seek to minimize the issue of hunger here and abroad.

How Can I Help Meet Needs?

Community Culinary School: This program provides training in food services for underemployed individuals. Students prepare the food for Friendship Trays and we support this effort by funding. Visit their website at www.communityculinary.org.

Community Food Rescue: This group rescues perishable food items from restaurants, hospitals and grocers to distribute among Charlotte's hungry. We make financial contributions to assist with operating costs. Volunteer drivers are needed.Visit their website at www.communityfoodrescue.org.

CROP Walk: St. John's provides space and utilities for the local office. Fifty to sixty members of our church walk in the annual event to raise funds for hunger. Funds are donated to local and international hunger agencies. Visit their website at www.cropwalk.com.

Friendship Trays: For years, St. John's has supported Friendship Trays, an organization that provides daily hot lunches to elderly or shut-in persons. In addition to financial support, we provide volunteers who work once a week or once a month to pack or deliver lunches. Visit their website at www.friendshiptrays.org.

The Gleaning Network: Sponsored by the Society of St. Andrew, this group organizes volunteers to harvest good produce that would otherwise be discarded and distributes it to the hungry. Visit their website at www.endhunger.org/north_carolina.htm.

Loaves and Fishes: This is a network of 16 food pantries providing direct emergency food assistance to people in crisis. Volunteers are used to staff pantries and receive telephone referrals. We also participate in the annual food drives. Visit their website at www.loavesandfishes.org.

Second Harvest Food Bank: This agency is part of a national organization that handles food and other products for distribution in a 16 county region around Charlotte. We provide financial assistance. Volunteers are needed to sort and organize contributions. Visit their website at www.secondharvestcharlotte.org.

Room in the Inn, Uptown Shelter & Urban Ministries: Working with these programs we provide food to 12 homeless men each Friday night, December through March.
